Where the Road Ends… Sitovo – a Forgotten Rhodope Village
Sitovo is one of many depopulated villages in the beautiful Rhodope Mountains. It is located at 1,300 meters above sea level, just 30 km from Plovdiv – yet it feels worlds away from the noise and rush of the city.
The journey itself is a scenic experience, passing through breathtaking landscapes, rocky formations, the winding Dervishka River, and natural springs with fresh mountain water. Along the way, do not miss the small but beautiful waterfall between Sitovo and Lilkovo.
Just before the village, on the left side of the road, lies the mysterious Sitovo inscription – ancient symbols carved into the rock that remain undeciphered to this day.
The village welcomes visitors with a quiet, almost frozen atmosphere. Old stone-roof houses are scattered across the slopes, reflecting a long-gone era.
Today, Sitovo is almost abandoned – with no shops, no cafés, and no permanent residents. Only during summer does the villa zone bring a little life, while in winter just a few lights flicker in the darkness.
A forest path leads to a sacred spring with cold healing water – a place popular among hikers and extreme sports enthusiasts such as motorbikes, bicycles, and buggies.
Sitovo is a place of contrasts – nostalgia and silence, raw nature and deep peace. Here, the Rhodopes reveal their most authentic and magical face.
